Young Climate Warriors

Do you just take it for granted?

Updated: Oct 4, 2019

Did you spot one of your fellow Young Climate Warriors in The Week Junior this week? Maybe a friend or your school has a copy you can borrow.  (Hint - have a look in the 'Over to You' section).

ELECTRICITY ... There are so many things in our modern world that we take for granted. Sometimes it’s good to stop and wonder … where does our electricity come from? how is it made? how much do you use?  With climate change happening around us we are all trying to reduce the amount of electricity we use, as this helps us cut our carbon emissions.

This week’s challenge needs the help of your parent / carer.  Can you find your electricity meter?  Does it need a key – can you use it to open the meter cupboard?  Your challenge this week is to note down a few meter readings – and try and work out how much you use – in a day, in a week?   Write them down - on something that you will be able to find again -  and we can check again in the middle of winter.  (Average household daily consumption is likely to be about 10kwh – which reflects higher levels in the winter than the summer)

Can you think about how to reduce the amount of electricity you consume? – some of our past Young Climate Warriors challenges will help with this.

When you are on the case with monitoring and reducing your electricity consumption then please HIT THE RED BUTTON and let us know!

This week, Greta Thunberg has made an incredibly powerful speech in New York at the United Nations Climate Action Summit.

There are some good news stories about how countries are responding to climate change.  The UK is making great progress in converting its electricity production from being created by the burning of fossil fuels to being created from renewables – like solar panels, hydro, biofuels, and onshore and off-shore wind turbines. However Greta’s message is clear: we need to do more to cut emissions, more quickly.

Greta Thunberg is angry about too many ‘empty words’ – people saying things that then don’t happen. As Young Climate Warriors you have committed to DO something, to make changes happen – so find out how much electricity you consume and strive to reduce it this week.

If you're wanting to remind yourself of ways in which you can save energy and reduce your carbon emissions, you could watch this European Commission youtube video. However, no doubt you will also be able to think of plenty of ideas of your own! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-g73ty9v04 Don’t forget to HIT THE RED BUTTON when you have completed this challenge!
