You've got the POWER in you ... take action TODAY!

Updated: Oct 2, 2020

You’ve got the POWER in you to take action. Can you be a POWERFUL Young Climate Warrior - learn about and reduce your electricity/power consumption?

There are so many things in our modern world that we take for granted. Sometimes it’s good to stop and wonder … where does your power/electricity come from? how is it made? how much do you use?  With climate change happening around us we are all trying to reduce the amount of electricity we use, as this helps us cut our carbon emissions.

This week’s challenge needs the help of your parent / carer.  Can you find your electricity meter?  Does it need a key – can you use it to open the meter cupboard?  Your challenge this week is to write down a few meter readings – and try and work out how much you use – in a day, in a week?   How does this compare to the average household, which uses 8-10kwh a day on average across the year?  Remember, our power consumption tends to go up when it gets colder and darker outside.

Can you think about how to get POWERFUL and reduce the amount of electricity you consume? – some of our past Young Climate Warriors challenges will help with this.

When you are ‘empowered’ and know how to monitor and reduce your power consumption, please HIT THE RED BUTTON and let us know!

This week, Greta Thunberg’s Fridays for Future campaign are organising a global day of action for the climate.  There are some good news stories about how countries are responding to climate change.  The UK is making great progress in switching its electricity production from the burning of fossil fuels to the use of renewables – like solar panels, hydro, biofuels, and wind turbines. But Greta’s message is clear: we need to do more to cut emissions, more quickly.

In the past, Greta Thunberg has expressed anger about too many ‘empty words’ – people saying things that then don’t happen. As Young Climate Warriors you have committed to DO something, to make changes happen – so find out how much electricity you consume and strive to reduce it this week.

If you want to remind yourself of ways in which you can save energy at home and reduce your carbon emissions, you could watch this European Commission youtube clip. No doubt you will also think of plenty of ideas of your own! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-g73ty9v04

Don’t forget to HIT THE RED BUTTON when you have completed this challenge!
